3 Goals To Consider When Setting Up Pallet Racks In A Warehouse

If your warehouse business is growing, it might be time to redesign and reorganize your warehouse. To do this, you may need to purchase industrial pallet racks, which are large shelving units designed to hold pallets of goods. As you choose the racks you want and install them in your warehouse, there are three main goals you should have in mind, and each of these will help your business operate more efficiently.

Safety

Warehouses generally have concrete floors, tall ceilings, and lots of shelving units. As you search for the right pallet racks to use, keep the following things in mind:

  • The height of your ceilings – This will help you purchase the right amount to stack on top of each other.
  • The forklift you have – Forklifts can only reach things within a certain distance, and there would be no point in putting shelves up that you cannot reach.
  • Maximum load limits – You may also need to look for shelves that will hold up the material you have, and this is important for safety reasons.

Accessibility

Another thought to consider is the layout of the pallet racks, and whether you should choose single racks or double racks. A double rack is wide enough to accommodate two pallets of goods, instead of just one. Fitting two on the racks may give you more storage space for your merchandise, but it can also make it more difficult to access goods.

Accessibility also involves creating aisles that are large enough for your forklifts and machines to operate in when loading and unloading goods.

Organization

After choosing the right pallet racks, you will need to set them up in a way that allows you to stay organized, and this requires a lot of planning. You may want to begin by creating a drawing of the layout of the warehouse, including the shelves it contains.

You could then number or letter each of the shelves on the diagram and on the actual fixtures. By doing this, you could label where all of your inventory belongs, and this is a great way to stay organized.

You should also plan on placing barcode labels on each of the shelves because this offers another way to locate goods that you have. Setting up a good system for this will help you save time when loading or unloading goods from the shelves.

If you are interested in purchasing new pallet racks for your warehouse, contact a company that sells them. You can hire the company or an individual contractor, like Certified Handling Systems, to set them up for you, and you will be on your way to having an organized warehouse business.
